IF there’s one thing British people love, it’s a good old moan.
That was certainly the running theme between the two stand ups performing as part of the Bristol BrouHaHa comedy festival, Ian Stone and Alun Cochrane.
Both picked apart the mundane stupidities of daily life, although on the night Stone was the better of the two.
A familiar face thanks to regular appearances on TV panel shows like Mock The Week, the north Londoner is much funnier in the flesh.
The terribly titled ‘Stoney Baloney’ is an Edinburgh show from 2008 revamped, and essentially a one hour wave of sarcasm.
There were attempts to wrap it up as a view on life, but as he said himself forget the observational stuff, the gags are much better.
His skill is maintaining a light hearted air while taking in pretty much every social minefield you can think of.
The nearer the mark he got the funnier he became, with jokes on such unlikely subjects as rape, laughing at natural disasters, homophobia, Muslims and Israel.
There was some pretty ropey stuff about the hacking crisis that seemed to be very thrown together.
It did lead to a great gag about the BNP and the Green Party forming a government coalition of their own “ban immigration, we’ll save pollution on flights” – although he obviously didn’t realise Southville is one of Bristol’s Green Party strongholds.
Glasgow-born but with a Yorkshire accent, Cochrane shied away from the more explosive subject matter, and was less interesting as a result.
His tendency to undercut his own material by claiming it was lightweight didn’t help.
But it was still a very funny show, thanks in no small part to his apparent obsession with food.
If there was a foodstuff he didn’t mention it’s hard to think of one.
From the right time to eat a plum to denying a man coriander for the rest of his life, he took great pleasure in rolling the sound of every edible off his tongue.
Sadly he didn’t do his routine about eating a peach, but it’s worth tracking down on a certain video website. Or by just looking below.
Another strong double bill for the BrouHaHa with more to come tonight.
